Women's Leadership Council funds programs at Philo Magnet Academy and Mineral Springs and East Forsyh Middle Schools in support of our community's goal of improving the high school graduation rate. Volunteer opportunities surrounding these programs occur throughout the year. Our programs include:
Family Engagement: The WLC provides funding to support a family engagement coordinator at each middle school. The coordinator aims to strengthen the family, student, and school relationship, with outreach to parents, parent and student workshops, and truency intervention.
Summer Success Academy: This two week program (6 hours/day plus free breakfast & lunch) for all rising 6th graders. The program provided tutoring, study skills, time management skills and other middle school preparation. Instructor training and curriculum was provided by WS/FCS. During
Tutoring: WLC is providing funds to pay certified teachers to tutor during and after school. Approximately 1,000 students have participated in the tutoring programs.
School of Hard Knocks: Though it is not a WLC funded project, many of our members enjoy volunteering at the School of Hard Knocks. The School of Hard Knocks is designed to teach kids the value of money and the importance of making wise decisions.
