2010 School of Hard Knocks
October 7, 2010

"School of Hard Knocks” is an activity designed by Philo Magnet Academy's faculty and staff to give 8th graders a better understanding of how their education/training impacts their career choice and future lifestyle. When preparing for the School of Hard Knocks, students are asked to choose a desired career and lifestyle they “expect” to be pursuing after high school (marriage, pets, children, etc.). The students are given monthly salaries, based on what career they have chosen, and are randomly given other life choices (number of children and marriage). Each student is expected to keep a running checkbook and “live” by budgeting for house payments, paying utilities, groceries, student loans, car insurance, as well as other unexpected expenses at approximately 17 booths that are run by volunteers.
